It’s not too early to begin thinking about gift-giving for the Christmas season. Consider giving silver coins for Christmas. These coins are actually quite affordable and can make a truly cherished gift.

Gift-Giving at the First Christmas

If you are familiar with the Christmas story, you’ll remember that the Three Wise Men, visitors from the East, brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Why not follow in the footsteps of these Sages from the Orient: Give the gift of precious metal coins to your loved ones.

Why Silver Coins?

But the Wise Men gave gold, why are you suggesting silver? Simply because it is far more affordable for the average person. For example, you can purchase an American Silver Eagle bullion coin for around $20 these days. It can be an affordable gift for many.

Silver coins have been minted for centuries and are widely available. You may wish to consider giving a coin dated with the recipient’s year of birth or wedding year (remember silver is the traditional 25th wedding anniversary gift).

Silver Coin Gift Suggestions

1932 Washington Quarter

  • If your loved one was born or has a significant anniversary from the year 1986 to 2015, the gift of an American Silver Eagle is hard to beat. These are bullion coins and are widely available in brilliant uncirculated condition. They make beautiful gifts for about $20.

  • If your special person was born between 1932 and 1964, these were the years that silver Washington Quarters were minted by the US for general circulation. Many of the dates were minted in large numbers, so their cost, even in uncirculated condition, is quite affordable.

  • Uncirculated Franklin Half Dollars are gorgeous coins, commemorating a great American figure. They were minted from 1948 to 1963. Loved ones with birthdates or wedding anniversaries in these years will treasure these as very special gifts. Many of these half dollars, depending upon the date and the coin’s grade, can be purchased for $15 or less.

These are but a few suggestions. There are many more beautiful coins that can make excellent gifts. Don’t restrict yourself to US-mined coins. The silver Canadian Maple Leaf, The silver Chinese panda and the silver Austrian Philharmonic are but a few of the handsome gift possibilities from other coin-loving countries.

Where to Buy these Coins

You can easily purchase these and other coins from Amazon and eBay. Because of the high volume of sales, you’ll be reasonably sure that you will be getting good value from these quality outfits. Be sure to see the ads in the right-hand column.

This is an awesome article about coins and I’d never have thought about buying them as gifts for Christmas or as Birthday presents. Many years ago they used to be quite a collectors item, especially in the UK though I’m not sure now because I rarely go to the post office. They used to be hung up everywhere in the PO. I’ve always thought of these for the older generation, I guess that counts me now lol. Would you know if younger people actually buy these or even love receiving them?
