Dateline March 28, 2017: A giant gold maple leaf coin has been stolen from a museum in Germany. According to the BBC, the the super-sized coin was taken at night from the Bode Museum in Berlin.
The “Big Maple Leaf”
Nicknamed the “Big Maple Leaf”, the enormous coin was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2007. The coin is 3cm. (1.18 in) thick, 53 cm. (20.9 in.) in diameter, and carries a likeness of Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse, as Canada’s head of state. The reverse side shows the Canadian national symbol, the maple leaf.
The Big Maple Leaf has a face value of $1,000,000 but is estimated to actually be worth $4,000,000 today.
Exactly how the thieves carried out their actions is unclear. The coin is too big for one person to carry. The Bode Museum was alarmed and the coin was secured with bullet-proof glass inside the building.
