Gold and Silver : The Best Precious Metals Investments

Gold and Silver should be a part of everyone’s investments, especially in these uncertain times. Gold and silver, whether in the form of coins or bullion, are the best precious metals investments you can make. They are affordable, beautiful to look at and represent a real, tangible storehouse of value.

Gold Throughout History

The ancients loved gold and silver, and these beautiful  metals quickly became the standard currency among the  nations of the world. Today, most money is not backed by gold or silver, but by the promises of governments (you be the judge of the real value of that). Gold and silver still represent a storehouse of value, as evidenced by the large amounts of these precious metals being kept by many nations in their reserve banks and by many wise individuals as a hedge against uncertain economic times.

The best precious metals investments are gold and silver coins and bullion, which you can easily and affordably purchase as a private investor or collector. If you are just starting off, focus on silver because the price of silver is less than the price of gold and you will be able to make your first purchases for a relatively small outlay. As you build up your investment, begin looking to add gold.

In addition to the investment and hedging value of gold and silver, these coins are incredibly beautiful and are excellent for coin collections because of their numismatic value.  One of the real beauties of gold and silver investing is that you can combine investing and hedging with the enjoyment of coin collecting.

I have been considering gold and silver as one of my investments. I am just wondering which is better for a beginner, the coin or the bullion? Or there is no significant difference between the two?

Glen, Thanks for your excellent question. It would depend on whether you are more of an investor or a collector. The collector tends to view gold and silver coins as beautiful numismatic pieces. They like to look at them and hold them. They show their coins to their friends. The are aware of their value but the price they can get from their coins is not the top concern on their mind. On the other hand, the investor in mainly concerned with making a good return on his precious metal purchases. An investor tends to buy bullion or rare coins that he expects to appreciate in value over time. Bullion has a higher percentage of gold or silver than coinage that was produced for general circulation, hence investors often favor bullion. Many folks are actually a blend of the two, both investor and collector. Not every investor is a collector but, in actuality, every collector is an investor, whether they know it or not. Should you have additional questions or comments we would be happy to help.

Hi Michael, as you say, gold and silver coins is fun and easy, and they keep their worth. I bought some silver coins to give present for special occasions. That’s an original present for weddings and aniversaries. Loes

Hey, this is some great information. I would certainly love to invest in some gold bullions. I’m sure you have a lot more piece of mind compared to other investments. How can you test gold and silver to make sure it’s real?

Tavis, you pose an excellent question. Scams abound in the investment and collecting world and everywhere else. Fortunately for gold and silver, the physical properties of these metals are well known. If a coin or bar is real silver or gold, it will be heavy. Hold a pre-1964 silver quarter in one hand and a modern one on the other – you will notice a big difference in the heft factor. Now drop each coin, the silver hits the ground with a much more resonate sound than the tinny new quarters. Of course, you can do even more sophisticated physical and chemical tests if you need to. The best way to assure yourself that you are buying silver or gold bullion and not something fake is to use a reputable dealer who had a record of great customer satisfaction. Our preferred broker, JM Bullion, is a great source for authentic gold and silver bullion.

    Hello!
This is my first time visiting your website and I find it marvelous! Your posts are clean, thorough and offer very valuable information for every starter -and not- investor. I have been investing in stock options for the past three years and I would truly want to start investing in silver. My husband has been an investor in medals for the past 22 years and even wrote a book regarding how some medal markets are manipulated.
This is some great information you offer and thank you for that. I will be stopping by more often!

Really interesting stuff here. We have seen such an increase in gold and silver jewelers over the past 5-10 years because of the increase in the overall value. I appreciate the resources you shared, too. I have some gold coins and other prescious metals that I would like to find out the value about. Thanks again for a great article on the topic!

Thank you Howie for visiting. One great idea to start checking on the value of your coins is to look them up on eBay and Amazon. You’ll get their current retail value and perhaps you can sell them there if you so desire.

You have a nice clean site that is loaded with information about gold and silver. You are right about these medals holding their value. They have been around for a long time, centuries in fact. They do not lose value as quite as fast as other things such as paper money. Money is not to safe anymore, now that it is not backed by gold.

Thanks Harry for a great comment. Indeed, gold and silver are called precious metals because they remain storehouses of value over time. Fiat currency just doesn’t do that.

You show a great passion for Silver and Gold! Growing up, I always watched my dad buy coins. Some are well over 45 years old. He had purchased to keep as an investment for the future. I am not sure of the value of them. If, I keep reading here , I am sure I will find out and be able to pass on the word. Unless, they are passed down on his will. They have been nicely secured and safe. It sounds like he has been doing everything you have suggested. Thank you for your wonderful information. It gave me more of an insight of their value.
